There’s Nothing Like Spring Grass

While it may feel like it happens overnight, spring grass has quietly been preparing all winter. During the colder months, grass does not die. It simply goes dormant, especially here in Westfield and Carmel, Indiana where seasonal shifts play a major role in lawn care and landscaping cycles.

Beneath the surface, the root system stores energy in the form of carbohydrates all winter, waiting for temperatures to reach the right conditions. Indiana lawns are primarily made up of cool-season grasses, often a blend of Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, and Perennial Ryegrass. These grasses start becoming active when soil temps consistently reach 50-55°F, that’s when you’ll notice some subtle green returning. Once temps move to the 60-75°F range, that growth really accelerate, which is when lawns seem to explode overnight. A few warm nights in a row can push soil temps over that threshold. In addition to carbohydrates, grass also stores nitrogen, an essential nutrient responsible for that rich, vibrant green that makes spring feel like spring.

As you have likely noticed, Indiana is looking greener by the day. This week, our mow crews will begin their rounds! We typically mow to about 3.5 inches. Taller blades help shade the soil, which prevents weeds, retain moisture so you water less, and encourage deeper root growth, resulting in a healthier, more resilient lawn.

We approach lawn care with intention, paying close attention to timing, conditions, and the way grass naturally grows throughout the season. It’s more than just a mow that keeps our clients lawns looking great!

We are beginning service 1 week earlier than normal due to warmer temperatures and rainfall this spring. Our crews will be working hard to keep your lawn maintained in between the upcoming rain next week.
