There is a big time storm coming to Indiana this weekend! Forecasts are calling for 8 to 12 inches of snow, and a chance to beat our single-day snowfall record. We want to keep you safe and informed, so check out our tips below!
Planning
Know where snow is going on your property. If you own a commercial property, make sure the lot is clear before a storm arrives.
Mark all curbs, curves, and hazards beforehand with reflective snow sticks. Our teams use yellow and red markers that are 3' tall. We install them in November while the ground is still soft.
If your property requires certain hours of operations or access, make sure it is communicated beforehand.
Pretreat
Don't wait until snow has fallen to begin salt or ice melt. Our teams pretreat lots, sidewalks, and entryways with the correct product before the first flakes arrive. This helps create a brine that prevents early ice buildup.
Know what product to use based on temperatures. Between 20-32 degrees, salt works very well at melting snow. Under 20 degrees it loses efficacy quickly though. If it is 10 degrees or colder, you will need an ice melt product like magnesium chloride or similar. This ensures you are actually treating the snow and ice and not overusing (and overspending) on salt.
Push
Our snow removal teams use a mix of machines, snow plows, and snow shovels to clear our clients property. We push snow in waves: 2-4 inches of snow moves much easier than 6-8 inches of snow.
Snow needs to be pushed to locations identified in the planning stage and avoid blocking entryways, garbage containers, drains, and parked cars. Our experienced operators know exactly how and where to move your snow.
It may look light and fluffy, but snow weighs thousands of pounds when being pushed around. Our machines and trucks are heavy duty and capable of handling large snow events that smaller equipment cannot.
Post-Storm
Even after all the snow has fallen and your property is cleared, the surfaces still need to be post-treated. This prevents any snow or ice residue from being a hazard, and from melting and re-freezing liquid posing a problem.
With large snow events, loaders will need to be used to move higher into larger piles. Just pushing snow with plows and small machines can leave shorter, wide mounds that prevent efficient use of your space.
When you follow these steps with Springmill Group, you know your property is going to be in good hands. From light dustings to large snows (like today's), we will properly handle your Snow & Ice Removal all winter long. Please stay safe, keep warm, and give us a call!
